I would like to share with you my own experience on the subject.

When in 2004 I first published the first of 3 books on Hinojosa Lace
(Witch Stitch lace) I found myself facing this same problem: self
publishing or publisher. I inclined to self publishing, which let me
controlling the quantity of books according with demand in every moment
as well as prices. Lacemaking is a minority market and I understand that
the cost of the book have to be balanced for lacemakers. At the same
time I was not depending of third parties.
The disadvantage is that I have to take charge of distributing the books
and contact directly with buyers. But to contact with buyers on the
other hand, gives the opportunity to know the acceptance of the book.
So on the following years I self published the second and third book in
the same way.
I have to say that I am glad of the results, and I would do the same if
in a next future I will write a book again.

Subject: [lace] A suggestion for authors

I don't know what the contracts of other published authors are, but I've an
already had of 3 books (not lace) published, the first in 1983 and the last
around 2000 - before the ability to self-publish in it's present form
existed.
