I too learnt the basics from this book, with no local group or teacher nearby (but also with the help of Arachne members via the internet - now over 14 years ago!) Noelene in Cooma I learned Bobbin lace by correspondence 30 years ago and the text of that Course is now "Introduction to Bobbin Lace" by Rosemary Shepherd, still the best text I have seen for beginners.
