Dear Jere, et al
I just bought a copy of The Prospect Before Her for 1 cent on Amazon. $3.99 shipping. There are a number of used paperback copies, so I suspect this was a college text.

We have an opportunity here. This man is writing about lacemakers. I am slow to judge. In today's society, men are not always sexist. It would be wise to find out about him by asking questions. His website gives his email. http://www.hertford.ox.ac.uk/about/people/dr-david-hopkin He may have his great aunt's lace pillow in pride of place at home. We don't know, and therefore shouldn't judge. If he is beginning his study of European lacemakers, we might be able to help. There's a lot of erudition out there on this listserv, and appropriate questions might help, if he doesn't already know the answer.

On the other hand, Jerry may be spot on. But before we dismiss one of the very few social historians looking into the life of lacemakers, let us make available to him our expertise.

Thank you, Pene. I am interested in what is being taught at universities
in 2013, especially about the history of women.

The talk by David Hopkin, as summarized, seems riddled with assumptions!
He is promoting a book. Please remember that men's brains are not wired the
same as women's. This is not the 19th C (or even the first half of the
20th C.), but 2013! We all are familiar with folk songs, may sing them, but
probably they are not relevant to our lives any more than popular "music"
of our time. Humans sing.

The following award-winning book was reviewed in 2003, and I recommend it
again: "The Prospect Before Her - A History of Women in Western Europe
1500-1800" by Olwen Hufton. 638 pg. 1995 paperback from Random House (Vintage
Press) ISBN 0-679-76818-1, $18. By a woman, best read in small doses.
