I have also noticed that words like "Alencon" are used to give a classy sound
to any lace that somebody is trying to sell. And on ebay people are always
trying to pass off junk as "bobbin lace".

I have been doing some searches for "Alencon" lace because there has been some
recent interest in it on NEEDLELACETALK. 90% of the images are machine lace.
It appears that most machine made bridal lace is called "alencon" by its
manufacturer.

I guess we all have to remember that the internet is like a giant newspaper,
full of articles of widely varying reliability, and lots of advertizing.

So, I suppose that the best strategy is that if anyone is selling something on
the internet, and is calling it handmade, don't believe it until you can see a
photo with enough detail for you to verify that claim for yourself. Never take
somebody else's word for it, unless you know the individual to be
knowledgeable. If none of the photos are close up enough for you to see the
thread paths, don't buy from that source. If I were interested in buying
lace, that is the strategy I'd use.
