Thank you, Devon.

If our Arachne readers search Crystal Gregory, you will find her Artist
Statement most interesting. She understands structure systems in
architecture through cloth construction, in particular using lace structures as
 a
conceptual foundation for her work. Etc.

This reminded me of the 1982 lecture presented to members of the Lace
Guild of New York (now defunct) by the well-known educator and scholar, Milton
Sonday, at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in NYC. This is the Smithsonian
Institution's National Museum of Design. There was a large exhibition of Lace
then, to celebrate the formal opening of the museum's Textile Study Center.
Sonday's Cooper-Hewitt tenure of 30 years began in 1968. Therefore, much
of his work must be archived at the museum.

What Sonday likened lace to, in his lecture, was the structure of New
York's Brooklyn Bridge. He had curated an exhibit featuring the Bridge just
pri
or to the Lace exhibit. He created large drawings of the paths taken by
lace threads, which he compared to Bridge blueprints. I rather think it
might be useful to revisit the research he did at the Cooper-Hewitt. Sonday
authored the 32-page Lace catalog which was published to accompany the
exhibition. (Library of Congress Catalog No. 82-72120). I've been collecting
additional info about this exhibition and have a file on my library shelves
along with the catalog (for future generations?). I am writing from
memory; you can search his name for more info.

A new horizon in an old tradition is taking shape. Artists are finding
new
inspiration in the complicated systems of traditional lace making;working
laces in an untraditional fashion, expanding on its histories, and drawing

conceptual conclusions of an age old medium. Solo(s)House Project is
pleased
to welcome a curated discussion of contemporary lace in and around in New
York and New Jersey. "Following a New Thread" is part of current
residency
program, HERE WHETHER THERE.

Participants Include:
Devon Thein, Lace Historian, Critic, Lacemaker
Manca Ahlin, Architect, Designer, Lacemaker
Kaelyn Garcia, Artist, Designer, Lacemaker
