Susan, Were the crochet yarns plied with final s or z twist? Is there a difference between how tightly or loosley plied? Techincally crochet yarns should be plied Z to keep tightening the twist during crochet. Bobbin lace Cross stitch adds Z twist and "Twist"adds S twist (or subtracts Z twist is another way to look at it).
If you have two different ply twists in your yarns that would really mess up things.
