While the list is quiet, I would like to ask a question. A member of my lace club brought a beautiful lace collar into our last club meeting. It is an heirloom, coming from her family in the English Midlands, and is 100 years old, if not older. The lace is very finely made - beautifully made - in a sophisticated design of flowers and birds in very fine white cotton, with extensive raised and rolled work. Given the provenance, I would say it might be a very well-made, well-designed Honiton. Or it might be Duchesse.
But this beautiful lace has a feature that I have not seen before and cannot find in any of my books. The flowers and leaves are held together with fine braids, but they don’t zig-zag back and forth in the usual way. Instead, the picoted braids make a background pattern of rectangles, about 1 cm x .8 cm or so. Has anybody ever seen anything like this? I’m sorry I didn’t have a camera with me at the meeting, so I cannot post a picture, but I’m hoping someone might be able to recognize it from my description.
