Thanks for all the replies I've had about the *not* crocheted lace. . . Joanne in Bucks, UK
======================================================================= Hi Joanne, Lace identification is a big subject and I don't think any one person knows everything. Barmen machine bobbin lace is frequently mislabeled as crochet on eBay. Obviously, it's not the design or style. I think it is the more usual larger thread size that makes people think barmen bobbin lace is crochet. That and most people don't know very many laces: crochet, tatting, and sometimes bobbin lace. Some eBay sellers are very surprised to discover that they have a knitted lace and didn't think there was such a thing. Another time, a woman whose father had a lace factory was adamant that the tatting she was selling was something else because that's what her father called it. That person was not persuaded, but most eBay sellers usually are.
