I am starting a pattern that calls for 140/2 linen; no brand name is specified. Of course, I do not have 140/2 linen. The thread I want to use is "Premium Sulky 30 wt lighter long staple cotton". I like the colour and it matches well with some fabric I want to sew the lace onto.
I was unable to find any reference to either of these threads in Holly Van Sciver's thread chart, or the chart done by the Ottawa Guild of Lacemakers, or Vibeka Ervo's "Resizing Patterns or Threads". Additionally, the pattern is oval so it is tricky to count the pinholes. Brenda Paternoster's "Threads for Lace Edition 5" has a single reference to 140/2 linen (made by Fresia), and it is shown as having 36 wraps. The Sulky cotton I want to use has 27 wraps. How much do I need to reduce the pattern to go from a thread with 36 wraps to a thread with 27 wraps? Is there a formula that can be used in these cases? Thanks for your help.
