It's a beautiful autumn day in Canterbury, and I have just been
speaking on the phone to the President of the Christchurch
Lacemakers. She has heard from some of the lacemakers in the city,
and while we are not certain, one may have lost her home to
earthquake damage. Most have been inconvenienced by not having
water, power or sewerage facilities for some days, but these
utilities are gradually being restored. All lacemakers are busy
supporting their families, of course.
We do not know the status of the building where our meetings and the
group's library of lace books are located - there has been no
official word on this, although damage is suspected.
Darfield, which is where our Malvern 'sub-group' of Christchurch
Lacemakers is located, is 30 miles (50km) west of Christchurch. We
had already planned to have a Country Lace Day next Saturday, and
this will go ahead. We hope to be able to collate news of other
Canterbury lacemakers and their circumstances then.
In the meantime, many thanks for the offers of help, and the hundreds
of supportive messages - everybody is grateful for the love and
sympathy shown by our friends around the world.
