Although this is sad news for those who know what the difference is
and who take this difference for granted, I'm sure, you're not the

Yeah, identi.ca is by far the better known brand. I think it will make
life easier for all trying to spread the word of "the free twitter".
("Oh, a free twitter!" is what I just heard recently from an FSFE
member with Twitter account. :-)

Well, wordpress makes a difference in .com (service) and .org
(software) here. Identi.ca won't. Although, I think I see something
where you could make a small but not complicated difference: While
"Identica" is the software, "identi.ca" (with dot and perhaps no
capital "i") is the popular instance.
There are other projects with similar issues:
+ Sourceforge: Don't know if they make a difference between
sourceforge.net (their instance) and SourceForge (the software).
+ GNU Savannah did a rename because of distinguishing problems, but in
the other direction: Initially instance and software where called
Savannah and they renamed the software to Savane "to distinguish the
software itself from the websites, such as the GNU Project's
Savannah, that use the software."[1]

+ Slashdot: Their software is called "Slash" which is an acronym
(maybe also backronym :-) for "Slashdot-Like Automatic Storytelling
Homepage", hosted at slashcode.com. Most sites running Slash don't
say "we're running Slash(code)" but we're running the same software
as Slashdot. At least I do. :-)
