Forums are closed off into threads. Each topic has it's own little spot and if the title of that topic does not peak one's interest, they are not likely to click on it. But in that topic could be a great idea or subject that could spark an important discussion. With laconica all the conversations appear on the public timeline. They aren't closed off into topic/subtopic/subsubtopic. Right now, in order to have this conversation with you and the others, I have to reply to you, CC the mailing list. Then the others have to wait for the mailing list to update to see what we have said and it seems like it slows things down. If this were taking place on laconica, it would be instant and open for everyone to debate. If it were in a forum, and I titled it something lame like, "confused bout stuff" there is a chance that no one would give it the time of day. I'm just saying that I have first hand experiance of working on a project and using laconica as a basis for communication and it was a huge help. But, I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle here. No one seems to be going for it.
