Trying out a Laconica instance for dev communication would be an interesting
experiment. We might as well try it for a few weeks and if it does not
perform then we can move on.

Another issue with forums is they use the pull model instead of a push
model. If you don't visit the forums you won't know that 15 new posts have
been made. Some groups use hybrid systems like Google Groups or tools that
send notifications. Most forums that do notifications require you to visit
the forum and login to reply instead of just sending a reply email.

One issue with using a Laconica instance is it would raise the threshold for
inexperienced parties to contribute. Mailing lists are already confusing if
you are unfamiliar with the precess. Since this is a developers list it
would have minimal impact most of the time.

Other issues are the lack of attachments and limit in characters. There
would increasingly need to be links to wiki/trac pages. This requires a
change in mindset of the users which is oftentimes the most difficult part
of change. I would even consider this to be a pro because it forces people
to remove fluff and helps separate the different functions of communication.

Another possible result is that it could provide another layer for testing
code if updates where applied to the discussion instance a few days before
being pushed to identica/etc.

I say try it for a couple of weeks.
