I now have both screens, all cabling and am still awaiting the air data unit
(it has arrived at SFS and should be mailed this week). My admiration for
this system continues to grow with time.
I spoke with Nate Calvin of SFS at Sun n Fun about the SFS EFIS 2000 and
learned of one development that is disconcerting:
I have posted in the past on the LML the idea that you could leave the
CDI/GS head out of the instrument panel because I understood the EFIS 2000
is being programmed to display VOR/LOC/GS data on the screen in the near
future. I was disappointed to learn from Nate that this is no longer being
considered because he thinks the screen would be too cluttered. It will be
programmed into the version that is TSO'd for IFR operations, but NOT the
experimental version!
I think Nate is considering what would happen where weather conditions are
below GPS approach minimums. You would legally and logically need to have
CDI/GS information displayed to fly below the GPS minimums to the ILS
minimums, but becuase HITS (highway in the sky) is so good, you would never
want to be without this "backup" display. In fact, once you get used to it,
this is what you'd look at with an occasional glance at the CDI/GS display
to verify. If both of these displays are on one screen simultaneously, it
would be very cluttered.
I've given this a lot of thought and hope Nate will reconsider for the
following reasons:
All tangible objects are displayed in three dimensions on the PFD (primary
flight display - or aritificial horizon) while they are displayed in two
dimensions on the moving map with color coding to indicate relative threat
to safety. All instrument approach points are displayed in three dimensions
on the PFD including missed approach points etc. Therefore, you don't need
the moving map display during the approach phase.
With a two screen display, you could select PFD display on both screens at
the final approach phase. On one screen you would select the HITS display
and on the other you'd select the CDI/GS display. With this configuration
you would have all data needed in a decluttered display providing a legal
and safe method for flying approaches without the need for another head in
the panel adding weight, expense and taking up space.
With this concept you'd simply set up the two PFD's at the initial or final
approach fix and then you'd switch back to moving map on the second screen
anytime you like after reaching minimums for the ILS approach.
Am I missing anything here?
My hope is that many of you will agree with me and let the wonder boys at
SFS know how important this is to us. In fairness, Nate, Gordon and Rick
have their plates full to overflowing now and they don't need a bunch of us
chewing on their ankles. I'm told that there may be a capital infusion at
SFS soon in which case time and resources will become available to move
rapidly in any direction they choose so they need to know what we're
thinking. Don't harrass them, but it wouldn't hurt to drop them an email.
