I agree that backward compatibility is important. Without backward compatibility, the proposed change means that the content of disambiguation files and grammar files must be changed. That is a huge task.
Even if you develop a utility that lets people convert files to the new format, there remains a problem of the conversion of non-standard postags. For example, 'Adding only POS tags or tokens' shows how to add a non-standard postag 'UP' (http://wiki.languagetool.org/developing-a-disambiguator#toc8'). What will be the effect of the proposed change on non-standard postags?
