I am on a slow but technically broadband connection and I would like to test my laptop with dapper. I also have download limits. What I need to know, therefore, if anyone here knows,  what the size of the download for an apt-get dist-upgrade is so that I can work out if I and when I can do it without paying $1.00 per MB excess download charge. If the actula online upgrade is not as large as the iso, then I can take part, but if it is a full download then I can't

I can't tell you what size it would be, but apt can. If you update your sources.list to dapper, do 'apt-get update' to update the package list, and 'apt-get dist-upgrade', apt will tell you how many packages and how many MB are needed to download. It'll give you a y/n choice about whether you want to go ahead or not.
