Thanks for this information. I am new to debian and deb based systems, so don't yet think of fairly simple answers :-) I have had a look around for the dapper repository, and i'm sure its there somewhere, but cannot find it. Could you please tell me what the url is, or where to go and get it?

thanks

I am on a slow but technically broadband connection and I would like to test my laptop with dapper. I also have download limits. What I need to know, therefore, if anyone here knows,  what the size of the download for an apt-get dist-upgrade is so that I can work out if I and when I can do it without paying $1.00 per MB excess download charge. If the actula online upgrade is not as large as the iso, then I can take part, but if it is a full download then I can't

I can't tell you what size it would be, but apt can. If you update your sources.list to dapper, do 'apt-get update' to update the package list, and 'apt-get dist-upgrade', apt will tell you how many packages and how many MB are needed to download. It'll give you a y/n choice about whether you want to go ahead or not.
