Actually it's cleaner to set an environment variable JPDA_OPTS="-agentlib:jdwp=transport=dt_socket,address=8000,server=y,suspend=n"
and then use "catalina.sh jpda start" to launch Tomcat. Putting th JPDA values into JAVA_OPTS causes an error when you try to stop Tomcat. But that works fine.
