Ahh; the old invisible octal character trick, number 222.  ;-)

Seriously though, did your source happen to start on a Macintosh,
by any chance? They have the accented  iacute  at that char-point.

For ISO-Latin1 \222 is within the forbidden range, \200-\274 .

Perhaps LaTeX2HTML should automatically exclude such characters,
or at least report their existence (since there may have been
a definite purpose, as with the Macintosh accents).
