Either way it's not actually the client that's the issue. Perhaps a
server somewhere is stripping the header (though why I wouldn't have a
clue).
His posts also don't have the usual "Re:" at the start of the subject.
Reason enough to believe, that his mailer is sending them as new mail,
rather than as reply
