I like to think that questions are seldom stupid, while answers can
often be.  As far as I know, there is nothing simple like that in LDAP;

No, nothing in LDAP specs for that. Of course the OpenLDAP constraint overlay provides exactly this function. In ActiveDirectory, you had 3 chances (and slim and fat left town...)
