. then, sadly, there's no help in the backend either. Like most others -- AD enforces syntax but doesn't offer a means of defining additional constraints or acceptable values within the boundaries of each syntax. This is typically handled by some kind of front-end/provisioning system .

As far as I know, there is nothing simple like that in LDAP; No, nothing in LDAP specs for that. Of course the OpenLDAP constraint overlay provides exactly this function. In ActiveDirectory, you had 3 chances (and slim and fat left town...) Thanks very much for everyone's responses. It's an Active Directory system I need to deploy this in, so unfortunately OpenLDAP's angles won't be applicable (sigh). I'll handle the data validation at the application level, then.
