ITYM displayName, which is in etc/openldap/inetorgperson.schema. Our server works for Outlook, unless Outlook has changed. Possibly that's the one which generates searches like this (found in the slapd log): (&(mail=*) (|(mail=john*)(cn=john*)(sn=john*)(givenName=john*)(displayName=john*))) It worked once we added substring indexes for all of these, including displayName. We have no displayNames in the database, but slapd didn't know that without the (empty) index. Since this is an "OR" filter it tried to scan the entire subtree.
