Good thoughts, Steven. I have been following the laptop project very
closely through the months and years.

I was very pleased yesterday to finally see what appears to be the design
for a feasible generator for the XO (the laptop). It is a pull-string thing
that I suppose works similar to a See-N-Say or a Woody the Cowboy, with a
high-tension pull that loads a spring to generate power. I guess you strap
it to a desk chair leg or rung and work it with your leg or foot while you
compute. http://www.gizmag.com/go/6639/ or
http://www.olpcnews.com/hardware/power_supply/negroponte_unveils_s.html

Yesterday there was also an announcement of another country, Rwanda,
committing to buy the minimum order of hundreds of thousands of laptops
(tens of millions of dollars).

When I lived in Chile someone invited me to dinner and was proud to serve me
American Cheese. I asked them where they got it and they said that the
government (Chilean) was selling it at a good price. Reading the package, I
read something to the effect of 'Provided by the People of the United
States' and (I quote) "not for sale". Given that single data point (you'll
probably have others) it will be interesting to see how this laptop is
delivered to the people it's intended to serve.
