Well, you've mentioned a huge portion of the problem above:
the system won't boot from PCMCIA.

Beyond that, indeed, PCMCIA is _not_ simple in Linux, or at
least, for LRP-derived distributions. There are people working
on it; I should ask one in specific to this list. I'll ICQ him
right now.
