Did you get a chance to read the 7 page Taxonomy article in Embedded Linux 
Journal? It explains the tree pretty well. I came to my conclusion about 
kernel patches after reading the article a couple of times. Of course, it 
was just one article in a brand new magazine. So, it might be wrong, or I 
may have interpreted it incorrectly. It wouldn't be the first time I 
misinterpreted something I read.

Linus may. I understand he is very interested in embedded targets.

Agreed, but I would say it's a project to support network appliance 
embedded target environment releases. Boy is that a mouthful. :)
