The unlicensed 2.4 GHz band is also referred to as the IMS band, or
Industry, Medical and Services band. There is currently a lot of gear
competing for relatively little bandwidth. Besides the wireless phones and
wireless NICs, you have medical monitors, baby monitors, remote control
toys, bluetooth, spy gadgets and of corse microwave ovens.
The popular DSSS wireless NICs effectively use 1/3 of the IMS band width.
The FHSS wireless NICs use all of it but are willing to share with other
radios. (DS = Direct Spectrum, FH = Frequency Hopping)

I saw a show recently on the invention of the microwave oven. It seems a
engineer at Raytheon was working on some radar gear. When he took a break he
noticed that the candy bar in his pocket had melted. And he had a thought --
Food + Radar = Hot Food. So Ratheon went and build a 5000 watt prototype
(using and on hand radar tube) to test. It cooked _real_ fast. It was also
water cooled. :) Amana was licensed to build the Radar Range ovens and the
rest is history. BTW, they were also thinking of microwave central heating
for homes. The idea fell through for some reason. Probably a good thing.
