Larry, Look at dmesg output for possible problems. Change chat startup to include -v (verbose output), and look at syslog for problems. Change pppd startup to include -d (debug output) switch, and look at syslog for problems. Try manually starting pppd. The setuid problem reported on the user list may have something to do with your problems too. Check the permissions on ppp.lrp files.
