As Ray stated, the exact error message with a bit of context would
help debug the problem.  A copy of /etc/network/interfaces and the
output of "ip route" might be useful too, in case it's a network
setup or routing issue.

After trying Ray's suggestions, the following output might help
shed light on the problem if it's a hardware or kernel module
issue:

  cat /proc/pci
  cat /proc/interrupts
  cat /proc/ioports

I bet it's something simple, we just need more info to help out.
