One of the errata fixed in 1.0-stable[1] is:

 - /dev/nftla added to /var/lib/lrpkg/root.mount to fix a problem when
   trying to boot from DoC

RC4 is probably missing /dev/nftla1 , which would definitely
cause problems.  Can you upgrade to 1.0-stable and see if the
problem goes away?

Actually, that's not true.  An example from /linuxrc :

  echo "LINUXRC: Bering - Initrd - $VERSION"
    [..]
  [ "$VERBOSE" ] && echo "Loading modules..."
    [..]
  echo "Mounting a $SYSTSIZE TMPFS filesystem..."

After changing the values, did you backup initrd?
