This question really is specific to the service your ISP offers. But *typically* the Alcatel does not handle PPPoE; it just passes through (sort of like a bridge) traffic from the DSL line to the Ethernet line. So the client (in this case, the Dach router) needs to handle the PPPoE aspects.

To figure out if your situation is typical -- if you were connecting a Windows computer directly to the Alcatel, what would you have to do? (There's nothing magic about Windows, but ISPs usually tell you the answer to this question.) If you would need to run PPPoE software on a Windows host, then you'll need to run PPPoE software on the Dach router. If a Windows host can get an address using DHCP, then a Dach router most likely can too.

Oops ... only after writing the above did I notice the "BTW" where you said your WinXP host was connecting with PPPoE. That's your answer ... if the Alcatel doesn't "handle" PPPoE for Windows, it won't do so for Dach.

Quick question: Can I have my SpeedTouch Home (ethernet flavour) handle all the PPPOE aspects of my DSL connection or must I have a PPPOE client on my Dach box? I'd like to avoid having to rebuild my Dach box with a PPPOE client, if at all possible.

I liked my previous high-speed cable service, where all I had to do was have my dach box be a dhcp client.

If it (all PPPOE handling) can be done with the STHome how do I do it? I've followed all the instructions that I could find on the net (nuke all phonebook entries, add in a phonebook entry for ppp, add the ppp element, set to AlwaysOn, etc) but still no love. In the phonebook I use the VC/VP entry that works 100% when in 'bridged' mode, namely 0/35.

I'm located in Pickering, Ontario. My ISP is NutNBut.Net but I feed from a local BellCanada CO and thus should be able to do this if Sympatico users can do it.

Thanks,
scott

BTW: I have upgraded the firmware to the latest revision, .281 and have performed the hack to enable 'Pro' features on my 'Home' model.

I am presently able to connect my WinXP box to this modem, and using XP's built-in PPPOE support can connect onto the internet so everything is in workable shape.
