Did you try to upgrade a 3.0b release? ;-)

Serious, I really like the idea of making upgrading as easy as possible
but I also like simple solutions. It could be enough to create a simple
script which just scp all new packages to the storage media (or exchange a
CD) and reboot, without trying to track all possible corner cases (which
often introduce new problems). But I'm very curious what Cedric comes up
with, afterall he created a very nice upgrade system which is a big leap.
