Have you tried accessing /dev/hda > instead of /dev/sda? There are generic drivers (ata_generic, pata_legacy). But they can be skipped on auto-detection. Try to run 'find /sys/devices -iname modalias -exec cat {} \;' when 4.0 returns command prompt; also try to load all ata-related modules.
