I think we will always differ, because we use different meanings of "invalid". You are holding, quite rightly, to the objective standard of the accounting equation. For this reason, beancount is right in its philosophical grounding to take this stand. I hold, however, to whatever the user deems to be useful. I have no objective standard to claim, and my philosophy allows a hammer to be used on things very different from nails.
