I understand you completely; I too dislike having output going into the 
pager program automatically!

You can turn the pager off by adding --no-pager to the end of your command, 
so ledger balance -f /some/file/20xx.dat --no-pager for example

You can also create a file called .ledgerrc in the same folder as you're 
running your command from and add default parameters to that one. For 
example, if you put --no-pager in that file, you wont have to type it out 
every time you're running a command. That's how I got away from the pager 
once and for all.
