The same happened at Scunny with a freekick - Gradel had a tantrum (he tends to grab the ball and hug it to stop anyone else getting it) and thus over-ruled Snoddy and Kilkenny, then duly put it in a rubbish freekick.
I do find it bewildering - as you say these things should all have been determined on the training ground. It seems to stem from 2 things: - we lack an obvious commanding set piece (free kicks and pens) taker; and - lack of a commanding voice there to tell people what should be happening. Howson is getting better at talking to the ref as skipper but isn't a commander of men yet. Whereas we've got plenty of gobby non-captains (Gradel, Kilkenny).
