Once again, towards the end of a season, our form falls off a cliff. This is why we always do shit in play-offs - because our form going into them is crap. If we do scrape in we will be out again after the semis, all the other top 5 teams are in form and we will lose to any of them over 2 legs.
Regardless of whether we get into the play-offs now or not (we will lose at home vs reading and that will let in Forest, plus we have to play QPR away - we had to win today), we need to try something different with the formations. For whatever reason 5 in midfield isn't making us more solid, it is fine to play that formation vs a side who comes to defend, but all teams know we cant defend for toffee so no one comes to defend any more. In theory 5 in midfield should make it more difficult to score against us, but I think there is a lack of defined roles for the 3 central players - and therefore it is a free for all. I don't know what Lees is like for pace, but he needs to be recalled and played at the back too, we cant rely on 2 old fogies to cover breaks/long balls. So, I would play 4-4-2 now on in, and if Watt is fit maybe put Snoddy up front to accommodate them both. Starting midfield would be Gradel - Livermore - Howson - Watt, with a view to bring on Kilkenny or Bannan later in the game when we have won the battles and there is a bit more space. But all of this is academic, we have to sort out our defence, we need some pace or some real physical presence there. What a fucking shame Kisnorbo has been out all season, he would have made a big difference I think. As for next season, I don't think Snoddy will go regardless of who taps him up. I suspect Gradel may go though, and that will be the only significant weakening of the first 11. If we don't get into the play-offs it will at least manage expectations again. But we have to face it, we will only ever go up in the first 2, and whatever teams come down from the prem will have a massive advantage again next season.
