Not necessarily!!  More likely is that the team has had lots of coaching on 
defending, that we had a semi-settled defence, and/or we are playing a system 
which now suits him better – ie he is able to overlap down the left, rather 
than be left to fill in the void Max left behind.

 

Max not playing is allowing White to show his attacking qualities more.  Pugh 
playing is allowing White to be more confident when he wants to go forward.  
Pugh is making the defence more solid down the left, and therefore offering 
White a bit more protection.

 

These are all other possibilities – as I keep trying to say, football is not 
that simple – defenders don’t get better the more games they play, not even 
young defenders.  Ben Parker being a case in point!!
