Started my Leeds supporting days as a 7 year old in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Dad in tin mining). Older brother was a chelsea fan, 1970 FA cup final came along and I decided to support the opposition. The rest is history, I've since lived in Woking, Guildford, Kingston upon Thames (before it was all poshed up), Burnt Oak, Colindale (arsehole of London), Peckham Rye, and then New York City. I'm now on my 41st year as a Leeds fan, seen probably a 100th of the games that stalwarts like Dave N and Rich W have seen, but I've followed Leeds through thick and thin, more thin than thick. Many memories, mostly rubbish ones, like going to great lengths to avoid hearing the result of the Coventry Leeds FA cup semi final only to watch it on tv delay (why was that game delayed back then?), enough said, that is just one of many memories like that. My Dad is an Arsenal fan (My old man said become an arsenal fan, I said......), my brother is a Chelsea fan (When I was just a little boy, I asked my mother what should I be) so I've endured endless piss taking over the last ten odd years, but the one thing they've always said to me is they admire my dedication to a team that I have no cultural connection to. Why do I love Leeds? Feck knows! I love Leeds because it's been my team, I love Leeds because everyone hated them in the 70's, I love Leeds because they called us Dirty Leeds but that team was one of the most talented beautiful teams of the modern game, I love Leeds because we had Eddie Gray, 40 times the player of George Best. I love Leeds because we sang to Soton fans "Thank you very much for taking Palmer....." I love Leeds because we had Batty, Vinnie (the man who tackled the mascot, doesn't get better than that), Gary Speed, Gary Mac, Wee Gordon, Billy Bremner, Paul Reaney (the most under rated player),Jack Charlton, Peter Lorimer, Mick Jones, John Charles. I love Leeds because we had Albert Johanssen in the days when few clubs had players who weren't white, I love Leeds because we had Lucas Radebe, that man is a god, and on and on and on. I supported Scotland as a kid because for one game in the 70's I believe 7 of the starting 11 were Leeds players and I cheered when Scotland beat England at Wembley. I'm not from Leeds, I'm not a yorkshireman, I've no history in Leeds but ask my family, ask my wife, ask my kids, ask any of my friends where my favourite place in England is, they'll say Leeds. If I ever go back to England it'll be back to my spiritual home. Phew, that turned into a rant. Oh and Bates out! Ps. Did anyone know that our own Mr Dingle is a renowned scientist? Just saw he won another prize for one of his books.
