Yes Soton were awful - they looked like they had never played together (which was the case!) - what little play they did have was let down by the final ball. It was clear the forwards were not reading the passes and vice versa. What was even weirder was the fact that their keeper very rarely kicked it out - he did not seem injured and no defender ever took a dead ball etc but the keeper kept on taking a dead ball by passing it to the full back. This suited Varney and Diouf who kept closing them down (would have suited Becchio too). It may be because of this that Sky stats had possession as 58% to them. I could not believe that stat - if true it was always in their own half. They had a decent 10minute spell just after the subs came on for them but we were up to everything they had to offer. Ashdown looked very assured in nets - a very good back up keeper, and Pearce and Lees cut everything out. Lees looked so much more assured at centre back.
As for the others out of position - Peltier had a good game but I am not sure why he was there ahead of Drury (who came on for last 2 mins) or even White who still looks very much a fish out of water at right wing. To me Byram is a bit wasted at right back and to be honest had a poor game (although the report on Sky text page 571 gave him the plaudits) - nothing really came off for him last night. Tonge is not really a winger but he did well enough there and it is hard to see how he can get in at centre midfield ahead of Austin and Brown (who was excellent last night) or Norris. Varney really changed the crowd's view of him, although fair play to the crowd they did not get on his back when he missed from a yard out and then hit the post / bar when he could have scored. He got a standing ovation at the end and loved it. One other point about the crowd - only 3 of the 6 of us ST holders turned up and I did not recognise anyone near me, all the fans in front of me in the queue had paper tickets, so they are all 'part timers'(in its true not derogatory sense) and the new owners should be finding out why they came last night (and made a decent atmosphere) but do not come to league games - is it the price (£20 last night). The ST holders who missed it , did so because they have no interest in the competition and it is hard to see how anyone can change that.
