You're right. Each individual contract will probably have leaving clauses
built in. Suppose it depends on the term of the contract.

Yes, but only due to the terms of the contract. So Stuart Pearce had his
written so that if he was sacked he got no compensation ("If I'm sacked,
I've failed, so why should I get any money"), but equally he could walk away
with no hassle.
But most managers have some sort of reciprocal compensation clause if
they're going to another job.
