The three things that did surprise me were: 1. Hezbollah went in: They dragged themselves into no end of shit. What is their exit strategy? Quite simply how and when can they if ever get out? They relit the whole delicate balance in Lebanon by weakening themselves and motivating their many enemies. In spite of the spiteful 'Israel can't possibly right' attitude our policy has been reasonable with Hezbollah. More or less 'don't change anything and nor will we'. We are now entering a situation undreamed off. In the South we have some strategic common goals with the Saudi government apropos the Iran/Shi'ia axis. In the north a similar tacit one with Hezbollah apropos Quada has arisen. 2. Russia: Siding with the side so universally hated in the middle east. Cynical but only if you get it right. Selling arms to a basket case that may well not eventually pay was an uncalled for gamble. 3. Russia: Having done 'an in yer face & fuck you' with the S300 yesterday backed down. I can not remember Russia ever doing that. The whole concept was flawed. How were AA missiles in Czechoslovakia an act of blatant aggression and in Syria an act of defense? But having got into that mess they backed down. Strange.
This area is strange. As opposed to what Israeli bashers, nose sniffers & neo-fascist may suppose. Israel's actions are not causes but effects in this byzantine bizarre neck of the woods. Palestinian action and inaction have made more problems and missed more opportunities than any Israeli act. We started in 1948 on the same starting line. As did India & Pakistan cum Bangla Desh. The vast vast part of the responsibility for the Palestinian fate is due to their feckless pathetic leadership. Even today the 'leadership' rejoices that they have displaced the best PM they ever had with another PLO puppet. From Technocrat to Kleptocrat. What is fascinating is Turkey. Is this latest imbroglio a testing ground cum advertisement for a re run in the Iranian elections next month? I doubt if it started that way. But both Iran & the US who can stir the shit anywhere in the area must be highly ambivalent about the whole business ending. Far far more complex than any of you double standard bearers care or want to believe. So stop the 'sly have a fly at Israel'. And I'll stop boring & erupting.
