Dave, I know a few lads who used to regularly meet up in a pub in Leeds before a televised game and, mainly due to the drink, ended up not going.
A couple of weeks ago I was out in a local pub not half a mile from Hull's ground. Their home game against Everton was on the big screens (Arabic stream) and it was quite full of people watching it - quite a few with shirts on etc. The ground was less than 10 mins walk away! We were talking about it and they said they could have 7-8 pints, watch the game and it was cheaper than buying a ticket! So I guess it happens everywhere. Also, some people genuinely prefer watching on TV (for replays, punditry etc) than the 'live' experience.
