It's strange how we can see the same thing so differently, maybe it's in
through the lens of our view of the BBC? They mentioned Dirty Leeds, but
discussed the context of it being of its time and how by the 70s we were
playing beautiful football and discussed the NF at Elland Road, which my
understanding was a real issue (I wasn't there) ? But also that it was
confronted which was also true and a matter of pride to those that did it. Yes,
It wasn't a football show, so didn't go into detail about the goals, but was
led by real Leeds fans, mentioned that we were the best team, won lots but
almost won even more, and that the grasping defeat from the Jaws of victory is
our thing. Above all, for me, the first 5 minutes described quite well to a R4
audience what Billy and Leeds meant to people of a certain generation, maybe
actually turned Matthew Parris into a leeds fan LOL!

Yeah I was surprised that the Scotland "disgrace" incident didn't come up, but
apart from that it was the usual litany of Dirty Leeds and racist/NF Leeds, and
when they did focus on Billy it was the Sunderland defeat, the Wembley sending
off, the Dave Mackay clash. No mention of his incredible record of scoring
winning goals in semifinals (6 times, I believe) or indeed anything about what
made him such a special player apart from tenacity and determination.

I did like the stuff about Albert though, and I'd never heard that quote before
about how Billy sorted out those who abused Albert.

Really Rob?, just listened to it and was imo fair, objective and honest, the
inclusion of Rob Bagchi gave it real authenticity. It put the dirty leeds
moniker into context. Also, importantly, mentioned Albert Johannensen and
Billy's protection of him, was honest about the NF leeds fans in the 80s and
what Billy did about it. What bits did you think were biased, I'm intrigued?
The only thing that surprised me was no mention of how his Scotland career
ended in disgrace.

Anyone else listen to it, what is your opinion?

Predictably managed to focus on every negative thing the BBC could drag up
about Billy and the club. Absolutely typical BBC coverage of Leeds United.

To counter all that, let me share with you a brilliant quote from Billy
after he had retired which I only recently came across: " During my time at
Leeds some supporters had grown from being children into young men. I felt
partly responsible for teaching them positives; self-discipline, respect,
never to give up on anything, to keep fighting for what you want and
believe in."

It was only when I read that that I realised how true it was that Billy
Bremner was a huge influence on my life, because I was one of those
children.
