INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST TO

Even though the victims of FBI law enforcement abuses from the 1970's
Counter Intelligence Operations ( COINTELPRO ) still remain in
prison, the Clinton administration is considering using the military
for domestic police operations. The use of the military against the
domestic protest movement could be even more disastrous for civil
liberties in the United States than the problems already faced by
activists as a result of federal, state and local law enforcement
efforts to suppress peaceful dissent. This February 6th supporters of
Native American Political Prisoner Leonard Peltier will be holding
protests and starting hunger strikes in an effort to pressure the
Clinton Administration to keep its 1992 campaign promise to free the
human rights leader. These protests will be happening in cities all
over the world including:

Leonard Peltier is an American Indian Movement (AIM) activist who was
framed in a case involving the death of two FBI agents on the Pine
Ridge Lakota Reservation on June 26, 1975. Leonard was arrested in
Canada on Feb. 6, 1976 and has remained in prison ever since. In the
two years before the shootout over 60 traditional Native American
resisters were murdered by a death squad (GOON) that was armed,
trained and directed by the FBI according to their own documents. On
the day of the shootout two FBI agents came into an AIM camp in the
same manner that the GOONs had done all over Pine Ridge. Internal
government files show that there is much proof that this was a setup
against the AIM leadership, which included Leonard Peltier. Two FBI
agents and one Indian were killed during the firefight. In the first
trial two AIM members were found not guilty by reason of self-
defense.

Leonard was arrested in Canada on February 6, 1976. Supporters are
marking that day by starting hunger fasts and holding protests as
part of an international campaign for justice for Leonard Peltier.
The Leonard Peltier Organizing Conference being held June 25, 26 and
27th in Kansas will also be announced at these events.

Message of Thanks to Leonard Peltier and the LPDC
from Mumia Abu Jamal.

Ona Move!

We, all of us, give solid thanks to Leonard Peltier and his numerous
supporters worldwide, for the principled assistance in France
recently. I deeply appreciate it - we ALL do. Many years ago, when I
was doing radio commentary for several Philadelphia college stations,
I frequently received taped reports from communications people from
AIM (American Indian Movement ), and promptly reported such
information to my audience. What I learned was that the U.S.
government was waging a vicious and unrelenting war against native
people. In (It) was a phase in that war that an innocent Lakota
activist, Leonard Peltier was dogged by this government, and framed
for murder.

For almost a quarter of a century, this kind and gentle warrior, this
artist, this son of his people, has withstood the brutal assaults of
the U.S. government, against its own "law," its own constitution, its
own precedent.

On February 6, 1999 the calendar will strike 23 long and lonely years
in U.S. gulags for Leonard Peltier. Twenty-three years since an
overtly illegal extradition from Canada to the U.S. Twenty-three
years in a Yankee Iron Cage for the "crime" of resisting American
repression.

As we enter a new century, it is past time for us to correct this
vile injustice against Leonard Peltier. Let a new century begin with
an act of justice for the Oglola people.

Free Leonard Peltier!
Free the MOVE 9! Long Live John Africa!
In the Spirit of Nat Turner
And Crazy Horse!
Ona Move!

Leonard Peltier."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
 February 5, 1999

"A real reason that Clinton should be impeached is for his refusal to
free Leonard Peltier. So I will join others in Civil Disobedience
near the White House on February 5th. The purpose is not to impeach
Clinton but to free Leonard Peltier. Additional rallies and civil
disobedience will take place in other sections of the country on
February 6.

Peltier's prosecutor says that he has no idea who committed the acts
for which he has been imprisoned for 23 years. And the FBI withheld
information at his trial that showed his innocence. In 1975 the
C.I.A., FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs invaded Pine Ridge
Reservation in its continued killing of Indians who opposed having
URANIUM mined on the Reservation. Now Peltier's life is in danger
because of an illness that is not being treated inside the prison
system.

Clinton needs ACTIONS to convince him, as worldwide letters and
phone calls have not. HE WILL NOT ACT UNTIL HIS REFUSAL IS
EMPHASIZED BY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO RALLY AND IN MANY CASES PUT
THEIR OWN FREEDOM ON THE LINE."
