Australian tour of Hon Paul Hellyer, former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada
and founder of the Action Canada movement.
Reclaiming Democracy - The People vs Global Finance.
On Sunday 11 April the 1999 People's Summit will be held at the University
of Technology in Sydney, as part of a series of Australia wide public
meetings.
The keynote speaker at the Sydney Summit is Hon Paul Hellyer, former Deputy
Prime Minister of Canada and founder of the Action Canada movement. Hellyer
will call for the cancellation of the unpayable debts of the world's most
impoverished countries, and advocate the dismantling of the IMF and World
Bank, and for governments to reduce their exposure to foreign debt by
issuing at least 50% of their own nation's money supply. In his most recent
book "Stop:Think", Paul Hellyer states "There is no better time than the
Year 2000, which has been dubbed "the year of Jubilee" to undertake an
economic revolution which would liberate people worldwide from the slavery
of oppressive debt."
The Sydney Summit is part of the lead-up to the 19 June People's Summit in
Cologne, Germany, where tens of thousands of community groups will meet
alongside the G8 Summit of leaders of the world's eight biggest economies.
This worldwide mobilisation of community groups, which are concerned with
economic justice and environmental sustainability, are starting to be
heard. The pressure of the 1998 People's Summits resulted in the G8 putting
Debt Forgiveness on the 1999 agenda, and also proposing to review the IMF's
HIPC (Highly Indebted Poor Country) initiative because of widespread
criticism that the IMF has offered "too little, too late".
