MORE ON REITH'S IR PROPOSALS - In draft legislation leaked to the media
this week, some of the worst fears of unions & workers were confirmed. The
legislation further limits employees options for legal industrial action
against employers, while loosening the restraints on their bosses. LINDA
RUBINSTEIN [ACTU Senior Industrial Officer] gives the ACTU's position on
the draft Workplace Relations Ammendment Bill.
Meanwhile, women's organisations in Australia have been clear they find the
legislation equally unacceptable. SUZANNE HAMMOND [Lecturer in IR at the
University of Sydney & representative of the Women's Electoral Lobby & the
National Pay Equity Coalition] explains concerns surrounding the fate of
women workers under the Reith proposals.
TELSTRA & TASMANIA - Last night, the Senate approved a further 16.6% sale
of Telstra. Tasmanians have been told that the "sweetener" included in the
deal through negotiations with Brian Harridene will benefit them. But what
can Tassie workers look forward to. GRAEME STURGES [Secretary, CEPU
Communications Division, Tas.] has been involved in the "Don't Hang Up On
Tassie" campaign aimed at preserving Telstra in public hands.
SERVICE WORKERS IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS - are subject to appallingly low
wages & conditions as CHRISTINE NUNAN found out on a recent holiday.
Bringing their case back to Australia, she has enlisted the aid of
Australia Asia Worker Links to help Solomon Island workers get organised.
She speaks to 3CR's PIER MORO.
