Item 2 - ENCOURAGING WOMEN TO STAND IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS
Contact: Carmel Kremmer, LGSA.

The Local Government and Shires Associations, in conjunction with the
Department for Women, are conducting a joint campaign aimed at
encouraging women to stand in the September Local Government elections.

The Local Government and Shires Associations, in conjunction with the
Department for Women, are conducting a joint campaign aimed at
encouraging women to stand in the Local Government elections this
September.

As nominations for the Local Government elections close on 11 August,
the campaign will commence immediately. It will initially focus on press
and radio interviews and announcements, supporting and encouraging women
to stand in the elections. All councils are urged to support this
campaign and the general principle of encouraging women to stand for
council.

The Associations and the Department would like to arrange media
interviews of women who are serving, or who have served, in Local
Government. Councils are invited to nominate suitable women from their
Local Government Area who may be contacted for such interviews. Contact
should be made with such people before nomination to obtain their
agreement.

Current or former women Mayors and Councillors are particularly
encouraged to come forward as possible interviewees.

Further details about the campaign will be provided in due course.
Meanwhile, councils and individuals who would like to nominate potential
media interviewees are asked to contact Carmel Kremmer as soon as
possible at the Associations on:
