Subject: [LegacyUG] CHILD OF UNMARRIED PERSON
I have a ( male ) cousin who had a relationship that resulted in a son
being born. As far as I know and / or have been told be his siblings, the
couple never >married, and the son was raised by the mother. The boy is now
over 21.
My problem is ... how to enter this person in the family records? I
presently have him with his father ( along with the mother ) , and hsve
notes that the >father and mother never married, and that he was raised by
the mother.
All that is known of her is her surname JOHNSON ... the father (
cousin ) more or less has been unreachable for many years.
Any ( workable ) ideas?
Thanks
Dick
I am not sure why this is a problem. You have entered all the information
you know in the appropriate way. If the family record you are compiling is
for your personal use (and your direct posterity) then the question for you
to decide is how important it is for you to learn the remaining details. If
the record is for publication, then you also need to consider whether
unearthing additional information at this time would be good or bad for the
parties involved. It is obviously a somewhat estranged relationship and you
don't want to make it worse. If the son or his descendents ever get
interested in their heritage, the information you have recorded gives them a
good start for continued research.
It is one thing to document uncomfortable events from dead ancestors, but
best to tread carefully when dealing with living people. If that part of the
family wanted to have everyone know, they would have maintained closer
contact or the siblings would have been willing and able to give you more
information.
