no, that is NOT what I was talking about. In order for my Sansone Zodia to appear properly, I had to hyphenate it. Otherwise it appears as Zodia only and all entries appear in the index as Zodia, first name Sansone. For example, my great-grandfather's name was Saverio Sansone Zodia. If I don't hyphenate the dual surname, it appears in the index and reports as Zodia, Saverio Sansone - it thinks that Sansone is a MIDDLE name

When the surname is Sconza Testa, that's how it appears. When the name change occurred I entered the remaining persons as Testa, so when it's appropriate Sconza Testa prints and when it's Testa, that's what prints.

Ruth,

Do all of the Sconza Testa's appear in the index as Sconza Testa for a surname or are they under Testa for the surname? It appears from the reports you show that it is NOT recognizing the first part of the surname and only recognizing the Testa.........which would mean that they had the same surname.

Dual surnames are NOT all that unusual in Italy. They are very common in Sicily. I have 5 different combinations in my tree alone. In order for them to appear correctly in reports, I had to make sure that the surname was entered correctly as as surname and not part in the surname and part in the name field. This was expecially true from the files that were gedcom'd from FTM which handles it differently than Legacy
